Naomi Osaka, Having Children Was Traumatic, So She Doesn't Want To Have Many More

Naomi Osaka has revealed that she does not plan on having many more children due to the traumatic experience she had giving birth to her daughter. The 26-year-old tennis player addressed the topic in a TikTok video posted on Sunday, where she responded to a comment about her potentially being pregnant and having more children. Osaka clarified, “I just wanna say, I’m not preggos, but if I was, I wouldn’t want many more because giving birth was traumatic. But thank you, though, for your blessings.”

Osaka, who welcomed her first child, a daughter named Shai, with rapper Cordae in July 2023, has previously discussed the difficulties she faced during her pregnancy and labor. In an interview with InStyle, she disclosed having tested positive for Group B streptococcus, a bacteria linked to severe risks for newborns. Her labor experience lasted over 12 hours and involved complications such as the umbilical cord being wrapped around her baby’s neck. “I do remember feeling in that moment, this is the worst pain of my life,” Osaka recalled.

Osaka also shared in Glamour that her post-birth recovery was challenging, affecting her pelvic floor significantly. “Having a baby completely destroys your pelvic floor,” she said. Despite her tough recovery, Osaka was grateful for the support of her “great team” and acknowledged the privilege of having access to extensive recovery resources.

Her remarks highlight broader issues surrounding maternal health, as approximately 700 women in the US die annually due to pregnancy complications, with Black and Indigenous women facing higher risks. The CDC reports nearly 3.6 million births in the US in 2023.

Dr. Lenorre Clarke, an OB/GYN, emphasizes the importance of women advocating for their health during pregnancy. “Find a physician who you can establish a good doctor-patient relationship with, get early and regular prenatal care, and never be afraid to speak up for yourself,” Clarke advised.
