Carlos Alcaraz has candidly reflected on his defeat to Gael Monfils at the 2024 Cincinnati Open, describing it as “the worst match” of his career. The Spanish tennis star, who has won four Grand Slam titles, was visibly frustrated during the match, culminating in a rare outburst where he repeatedly smashed his racket after falling behind 3-1 in the third set.

Speaking to the press afterward, Alcaraz expressed his deep frustration, acknowledging that he lost control of his emotions—a departure from his usual composed demeanor. “I felt sometimes that I wanted to break the racket. It never happened before, because I could control myself in those situations, in those feelings,” he said. “This time, I couldn’t control myself because I was not playing any kind of tennis. It was really frustrating for me.”

The match, which had been interrupted by rain and resumed the following day, saw Alcaraz struggle to adapt to the conditions on the Cincinnati Centre Court. He noted that the pace and bounce of the court were different from what he had experienced in practice, contributing to his poor performance. “It was really, really tough for me. I felt like it was the worst match that I’ve ever played in my career,” Alcaraz admitted. “I don’t know what happened. I couldn’t control myself. I couldn’t be better. So, this match, it was impossible to win, and that’s all.”

Despite the disappointing loss, Alcaraz is now focused on the upcoming US Open, where he hopes to regain his form and compete at the highest level.
