There is a lot of support for plans to construct an indoor padel tennis complex in Blackpool. The goal of the plans, which were made public in January, is to expand the sporting facilities at South Shore Tennis Club on Midgeland Road by adding four indoor padel courts.

Padel tennis is played on an enclosed court with a perforated bat and is frequently referred to as a hybrid of squash and tennis. Four padel courts with changing facilities and a spectator area would be available for year-round usage at the proposed complex. Although Blackpool Council planners have not yet decided on the application, it has garnered 68 comments, 65 of which are in favor of the idea.

If the project moves forward, proponents think it might bring national padel competitions to Blackpool and encourage local players to participate in the fastest-growing sport in the world. Played on a court that is one-third the size of a conventional tennis court, pédale tennis is a fun addition to the resort town that appeals to players of all ages.

Not everyone is on board, though. Some locals objected, stating that they didn’t think the building fit in with the neighborhood. Objectors have brought up issues such inadequate parking and alternate venues. Some argue that the development would be more appropriate as a component of the recently opened Common Edge Road community sports village.

One supporter of the scheme said: “Padel is growing massively in Europe and I think it’s brilliant Blackpool will be bringing it into focus with this development.
“Not only is it suited to all ages which makes it a welcome addition to the resort town but it will no doubt be a very popular new activity for local children.”
