Lopez beats Auger-Aliassime to enter the finals of the Fever-Tree Championships

Lopez beats Auger in the semis

Felix Auger Aliassime and Feliciano Lopez clashed against each other in the semifinals of the Fever-Tree Championships.

Lopez is more than twice the age of the Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime and he used all his experience to win the semifinal match against the teenager after being one set down in the match.

Lopez beat the young Canadian 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4 in 2 hours and 16 minutes in the semifinals in London.

He also created this unique record of being the oldest player to become the Queen’s finalist in the Open era. This is the 3rd Queen’s Championships final for the Spaniard who was facing match-fixing allegations some time back.

The Match

In the first set, both the players played well on their serves to equal at 6-6. Auger-Aliassime did well in the tiebreaker and hit and exquisite two-handed backhand down the line  to win the set 7-6(3)

In the 2nd set, the 113th ranked Spaniard saved break points on his opening serve and broke Auger in the next game to lead 2-0 The slight edge created was taken full advantage by the Spanish to win the set 6-3.

In the decider set, the young Canadian failed to take the break points he secured on the Spaniard’s serve. Lopez broke the world no.21 in the 5th game to lead 3-2 and maintain this slight lead to win the set 6-4.

The Spaniard will face 34-year-old French Gilles Simon in the finals of the tournament.
