Emma Raducanu, a British tennis player, made an unexpected choice when she skipped the qualifying tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. She is back in London, and it’s unclear if she intends to play in Cleveland or Monterrey the following week.

Raducanu made it to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington to begin her hard-court tour of North America. Her schedule plans were likely derailed, though, when she was not awarded a main draw wildcard in the WTA 1000 events in Cincinnati and Montreal.

Raducanu has made it obvious that she has not participated in qualifying for months. And even though she is in perfect health, she might enter the US Open having only participated in one tournament before.

Former British tennis players Laura Robson and Naomi Cavaday discussed the Raducanu issue live on television.

Robson asked Naomi, whose brother Nick coaches Raducanu: “I was going to ask you actually, with your brother being her coach, why was [there] the decision to not play qualifying?”

Naomi replied: “I think viewing it as extra matches, she got some wins in Washington, pretty happy with the level. Her body felt it a touch, trying to keep that managed. I mean, I think if she’d had a wildcard into the main draw, she would have considered playing. I’m sure she considered playing in qualifying as well.”
