Jannik Sinner arrived at the Cincinnati ATP with certain precautions due to physical hip problems that have left him notably lacking in confidence and rhythm. The Italian admitted to the American media that he feels better and is ready to dispel any worries.

He is also keen to perform well in a tournament where the circumstances haven’t been ideal for him. As the last tournament before the US Open, he understands how crucial it is to do well there to compete in the year’s last Grand Slam.

He talked about it in a recent interview and said: “I feel pretty good. Obviously, I spent almost a week without training before the tournament and then, after playing two or three consecutive days, a bit more than usual. That could have had a potential impact on the hip, but I’m not afraid. I feel good with the hip and I’m eager to play again on the courts here.”

He further talked about the improvement while still being the No.1 in the world and said: “We all have doubts. Sometimes, even before winning a Grand Slam, I had some doubts about whether I could win a Grand Slam or not. And then you reach the point where you win it. Afterwards, in your mind, you know you can do it, but you still have to work hard for it. If you want to maintain the position, you have to improve. And if you want to improve, you have to improve more than others. I think it’s a balance between how much work you do and how much quality you can put into the work.”

Though he is uncertain about his physical state coming into Cincinnati, the overwhelming favourite says he should never be written out and that this competition will boost his confidence heading into the US Open.
