Coco Gauff decided to compete in the 2024 Canadian Open, but the American player doubted if it was a wise move following her defeat by Diana Shnaider.

Given how few people have had the workload that Gauff had at the last Olympics, it’s a valid topic to pose. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the 20-year-old competed in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories.

She participated in two doubles, two mixed doubles, and three singles matches. She participated in seven matches total over four days, from July 27 to July 31.

The fact that she had two matches in one day on her last day in Paris didn’t help the fatigue either. Although a week has indeed passed between the matches, travel, time zones, and surface changes must all be taken into account. She played her first match in Toronto just one week later.

It didn’t work out for her and seemed a little hurried. She defeated Yafan Wang in two sets in her opening match of the competition, which went well. She lost handily in two sets in her second round of the WTA 1000 event in Toronto against Shnaider, thus it wasn’t the best match.

The Russian easily outperformed Gauff throughout the match, winning 6-4, 6-1. It was obvious that the 2023 US Open winner wasn’t satisfied with her performance.

She talked about it and said: “Yeah, I felt like I just wasn’t finding my timing well, I had a lot of unforced errors and a lot of double-faults. She played steady and she didn’t give me any free points, so kudos to her.”

She added: “I mean, I knew I was going to go into this tired either way, that’s just how it is. Yeah, there are times I question whether I should have played or not, but at the end of the day I wanted to test myself and see if I would be able to, how I would do being mentally tired a little bit and physically fatigued. I said going into the tournament I didn’t have high expectations, but I wish I could have competed better today, even if it resulted in a loss. I don’t think I competed well.”
