Andrey Rublev explains why he skipped Olympics

In an attempt to make up for lost ground, Andrey Rublev decided to skip competing in the Olympics in Paris in favor of focusing on the hardcourt swing in North America.

Rublev Plays

Andrey Rublev needs major success. The Russian tennis player’s season took a minor turn for the worst in the middle, losing matches that were extremely unexpected given his reputation as an incredibly steady player.

Seeking the points he had left behind, Rublev decided to skip the Olympics in Paris and concentrate on the hardcourt swing in North America. He defeated Tomas Etcheverry in two sets during his ATP Montreal 2024 debut, and he then discussed his timetable and the reasons behind it in a discussion.

He talked about it when asked about skipping the Olympics and said: “No, I didn’t think about it at all. Rather, there was a moment in my head, when I was losing, where I thought: ‘I chose to come here with more preparation time because there are players coming from the Olympics and it won’t change anything, they come from there and win, and I will lose anyway, I should have gone to the Olympics’. That’s what I thought for a moment (laughter).”

Rublev explained he wasn’t mentally prepared for the Olympics and said: “Yes, in the end, I am. I didn’t compete in the Olympics because we felt that I wasn’t mentally ready for it. With my recent results and the way I was behaving, we decided that we had to prioritize my career, taking some time off to recover mentally, play some ATP 250 tournaments, and arrive in America earlier to be fully ready for Montreal.”
