Olympic medallist Felix Auger-Aliassime was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday at the ATP Montreal Masters, dashigning Canadian hopes.

Cobolli, rated 33rd, won the opening set, but Auger-Aliassime struggled to find his flow and lost by a double break in the second. After committing a double fault on the first of his three match points, the Italian sealed the victory on his subsequent attempt.

Despite losing his opening-round match in Canada for the second time in a row, Auger-Aliassime lost in his Montréal first-round match for the first time. Even so, Auger-Aliassime left to a standing ovation from the home crowd. The soon-to-be 24-year-old acknowledged their support with a modest gesture.

Cobolli was happy to win the match and said: “Congrats to Felix for his medal. I did the perfect match today. I don’t know how I did it. I just tried to make a dream come true.”
