Raducanu’s exclusion from Cincinnati Open wild card list raises doubts for preparation for the US Open

Emma Raducanu's absence from the official tournament organizers' list of wildcards for the Cincinnati Open raises questions about how ready she is for the US Open.

Raducanu Misses Cincinnati Open Wild Card List

The absence of Emma Raducanu’s name on the list of wildcards for the Cincinnati Open, which is being provided by the tournament organizers, raises concerns about her preparedness for the US Open.

The 56-person WTA 1000 tournament is contested by the top 41 players in the WTA Rankings as of two weeks ago. Four players are awarded wildcards, eight players advance through qualifying, and one player may be granted a special exemption into the main draw.

Raducanu was anticipated to obtain one of the wildcards for Cincinnati, having missed the Canadian Open qualifying after being disqualified from consideration for a wildcard to Toronto owing to her ranking.

Raducanu has to make it through qualifying to compete in one of the biggest events on the North American calendar’s main draw.

It is uncertain if the 21-year-old would compete as she has avoided qualifying events since establishing a name for herself in 2021 by winning the US Open as a qualifier. The qualifying list has not yet been made public.

Before the Washington event, the former world No. 10 acknowledged that she had accomplished her goal of making it to the majors, which she had set out to accomplish a few months earlier.

She explained: “I started the grass season ranked outside of 200 and finished it in the top 100. For me, that was relatively successful. It guaranteed me a spot hopefully in the main draw of the US [Open]. That was a big thing for me. I wanted to make sure I got into the Slams.”
