Sergiy Stakhovsky reached an all new level of sportsmanship in Halle doing something completely unusual.
The Ukrainian was leading 5-1 against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Frenchman did strike a powerful serve that was called out. Unfortunately, Herbert didn’t have any challenge remaining, and it was Sergiy to use a challenge against himself (!!!). The scenario was curious because Stakhovsky would have been “damaged” anyway by his challenge. In fact, if the ball were out, he would have lost a challenge; if the ball were in, he would have lost the game. Eventually, the ball was called in!
Hebert ended up winning the match 2-6 7-6 (2) 6-4, but this match will be remembered for this incredible gesture.
That’s sportsmanship on steroids, and it was great to see!
