The ATP has reviewed an appeal from Denis Shapovalov following his default from the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Washington. Shapovalov’s unusual default, which occurred on match point, led to significant concerns regarding the fairness of the penalty imposed.

After a thorough examination, the ATP’s fines committee confirmed that the officials had followed the correct procedures in defaulting Shapovalov. Despite this, the committee deemed the automatic loss of ranking points and prize money to be disproportionate. Consequently, Shapovalov will retain the quarter-final points and prize money he earned during the tournament.

However, the ATP has imposed a $36,400 fine for the code violation. The committee’s decision reflects a balanced approach, acknowledging the procedural correctness while addressing the severity of the financial penalty.
