After following in his father’s footsteps and winning the Washington Open, Sebastian Korda stated it was perhaps the most memorable event of his career. On Sunday, the 24-year-old defeated Flavio Cobolli 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to capture his second career championship.
In 1992, Sebastian’s father, Petr, emerged victorious from the competition, marking the first-ever father-son combination to win the same championship on the ATP Tour.
Korda expressed his thoughts after the win and said: “I’ve been coming to this tournament since I was a teenager. We [the Korda family] have a lot of history with this tournament. One of my biggest goals was one day coming here, hopefully winning the tournament, and putting my name up there in the stadium. This is probably the most special moment of my career so far. A big thank you to the crowd. You guys were unbelievable this whole week, especially tonight. I really used your energy.”
The 2011 Washington Open was won by Sebastian’s coach, Radek Stepanek, who was formerly Petr’s coach. Following his triumph over Cobolli, Korda will now hold the 18th spot in the world, which is his career-high position.
