Jannik Sinner expressed his disappointment at not being able to attend the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris while his countryman Lorenzo Musetti won the bronze medal.

Sinner, who withdrew from the Paris Olympics after receiving an unexpected tonsillitis diagnosis, will make his eagerly awaited return to the tour at the Canadian Open starting on August 6.

At the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, Sinner acknowledged in an interview that he hadn’t been watching the tennis play at the Olympics and expressed regret for missing it.

He talked about it and said: “I saw some of the Olympics, although I didn’t watch much tennis. It broke my heart not to be able to go to Paris, the Games were one of my main goals of the season.”

The 22-year-old expressed his happiness that Lorenzo Musetti’s bronze medal in tennis ended Italy’s 100-year wait for another Olympic medal.

He added: “In the end though, looking at everything from a broader perspective, Musetti won a bronze, so an Italian is happy and I am happy for him. Let’s hope for gold tomorrow.”
