Juan Martin Del Potro faced Denis Shapovalov in the 1st round of the Fever-Tree Championships. It was the 3rd time that both the players have faced each other.
Del Potro beat the Canadian 7-5 6-4 on the Centre Court in 1 hour and 16 minutes in a clinical performance.
The 30-year-old’s season has been interrupted with a knee injury but he looked in great touch in the match and was great on his serve. He looked fit and hitting the ball with all the confidence, on the other hand, Shapovalov did not look at his best. He is 2-8 since he reached the semifinals in Miami.
The Match
In the first set, both the players were levelled at 5-5. The world no.12 broke in the 11th game and that was enough for him to win the first set 7-5.
In the second set, one break in the 5th game of the set was enough for the Argentine to claim the set 6-4 and wrap up the match.
The Argentine will now face the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the 2nd round of the tournament.
