Andy Murray and Dan Evans’ Olympic prospects have brightened unexpectedly following the elimination of two pre-tournament favourites, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
The high-profile pair, both unseeded for the Paris Games, were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the American team of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. Despite their formidable career records, Nadal and Alcaraz were unable to overcome the American duo, who secured their victory with set scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Krajicek and Ram will now face Czech players Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek, who defeated the second-seeded German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz.
For Murray and Evans, this turn of events provides a crucial opportunity as they prepare to face the remaining American duo, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, in the quarter-finals. Murray, competing in his final Olympic event, reflected on their narrow escapes in previous rounds, stating, “Tonight we deserved to win. We played every point and came up with some great returns when we were down in the third set.”
Murray also expressed optimism, noting, “Winning matches like that builds confidence. If we can serve well and combine effectively, we will be tough to beat.” Meanwhile, Team GB’s women, including Katie Boulter and Heather Watson, continued their strong performance with a victory over Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia and Luisa Veras Stefani.
