Novak Djokovic had a horrible campaign in Monte Carlo. The world no.1 was coming from a great stint in the US where he won back to back Indian Wells and Miami, but that took his toll and eventually he didn’t have the mental strength to complete on clay in Monte Carlo.
Back to the Principality, Nole lost in the first match agaisnt world no.55 Jiri Vesely 6-4 2-6 6-4. Both players scored 84 points, but it was the Czech to get to the 3rd round.
Vesely. I just wanted to win a game
Jiri didn’t expect this win to comment “I’m just very, very happy. When I went on court, I had completely different thinking, like, ‘I hope to win a game,’ or ‘I really hope to do well.’ But I really had no idea that I really would be able to beat Novak today.”
Djokovic. Difficult to accept
As per his nature, Nole was a “gracious loser” to congratulate his opponent “Obviously it’s not easy to lose the match in terms of accepting it right after exiting the court. But I have to congratulate my opponent,” Djokovic commented. “I think he played very solid. He was serving very big. He was playing tactically good and aggressive.”

Next vs. Monfils
Veseli will now play home favorite Gael Monfils. The head to head is 1-0 for Jiri that has beaten the Frenchman 2 years ago in Wimbledon. This will be a completely different story.
