The British tennis player Emma Raducanu decided to put her body and health first by turning down the chance to compete in Paris in 2024.

Raducanu hasn’t fully recovered her form after the 2021 Flushing Meadows triumph, and she had ankle and wrist surgery last year, which kept her out of play for a while. After withdrawing from their mixed doubles match due to wrist discomfort, Raducanu was recently eliminated from Wimbledon in the round of 16. Her court was criticized for refusing Andy Murray a farewell at Center Court during this memorable period at SW19.

Though awarded a wildcard, the 21-year-old chose to protect her physical health for the remainder of the competitive year rather than risk re-injury by competing in the Olympics. Raducanu’s next goal, following a strong showing at Wimbledon, is the US Open in August and September.

Raducanu expressed her thoughts about it and said: “Yeah, I would say for me, staying on one surface is important. The change in surface isn’t the best thing for me right now. In the future, maybe it would have been. At this moment in time, I think switching to clay straight after the grass is such a big contrast, and then back onto the hard courts, I didn’t want to risk anything. For me, this option was just a lot better. Of course, there are elements of FOMO that are missing. Watching the Olympic ceremony, everybody in the team kit wants to be there and represent your country.”

She added: “I think when I think big picture, long-term, it’s the right call. I think I’m very single-minded, and I do things my own way and on my own time. Not in a diva way, but just prioritising my body and my health because I know if I’m fit and if I’m giving my 100%, great things are coming. I don’t think there is any need to put additional stress on my body or any risk, especially with my history.”
