Australian tennis player Matthew Ebden officially announced his retirement from singles play following a decisive loss to Novak Djokovic at the Olympics. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Ebden expressed his gratitude and admiration for Djokovic, who defeated him on the iconic Philippe Chatrier court.
“Safe to say I’m officially retired from singles after that 😅,” Ebden wrote. “It was a pleasure to share the court with you, Novak, for one last singles match here at the Olympics. All the best for the rest of the tournament (and if it’s not one of our Aussies) I hope you get the 🥇 🐐.”
This match marked Ebden’s return to singles after a two-year hiatus during which he focused exclusively on doubles. Despite the challenging outcome, Ebden maintained a positive and gracious attitude, wishing Djokovic success in his pursuit of the gold medal.
