Holger Rune of Denmark withdrew from the Olympic tennis competition on Wednesday due to a wrist ailment.
Since the opening week of the season, Rune has battled with his form, dropping to 16th in the rankings and failing to make it to a final.
Following tests that indicated something was wrong with his wrist, Rune withdrew from the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag warm-up competition in an attempt to rest it. He had retired from his Hamburg quarterfinal the week before because of a knee issue.
Rune’s most recent competition took place last week in Hamburg, Germany, when he gave up the match in the quarterfinals against Arthur Fils down 6-4, 4-1.
Rune said in a statement: “I am really sorry that I will be unable to play in the Olympics. I have played with pain in my wrist throughout both the clay and grass season, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously.”
Rune recently provided updates on his injury and the rehabilitation process he is going through to strengthen his wrist.

Now the world no.16, Rune played his last match on the 19th of July when he had to retire when playing against world no.20 Arthur Fils in the quarter and the scoreline was 6-4 4-1 .
Currently, during this season the Dane has a composed 27-15 match record. Holger Rune’s best result of the present year was reaching the final in Brisbane.
Holger Rune will square off with the world no.292 Giovanni Fonio in the quarter. In the past, they have never played each other till now on the main tour.
