Andy Murray has gone back and recalled the Dunblane, Scotland, school shooting that occurred in 1996. The incident happened at Dunblane Primary School, where the former world No. 1 and his brother Jamie were students at the time. Murray claimed that the disaster taught him things he would need to learn as he grew older and that it also strengthened the bonds among the residents of the city.
Thomas Hamilton entered Dunblane Primary School on Wednesday, March 13, 1996, armed with four handguns, and he began shooting randomly. 16 pupils and a teacher lost their lives as a result. There were fifteen more injuries. When Hamilton committed the act, his furious shooting rampage came to an end. This remains the bloodiest mass shooting incident in British history to this day.
With the help of instructors and dinner ladies, Murray and Jamie, who were in school during the incident, managed to escape unharmed. Andy recently discussed the massacre again in a CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour. Amanpour initiated the Dunblane talk by inquiring about Murray’s opinion of his mother Judy’s proposed tennis centre in the Scottish city.
Murray talked about it and said: “I think it’s something (the proposed tennis centre in Dunblane) my mom really wanted, and with me and Jamie finishing playing soon, we’ll have the opportunity to be in Scotland more. You know, I’ll always love tennis and always want to be involved to try and help the next generation of British tennis players as much as I can. Yeah, I think it would be good if there is a tennis centre up there.”
He added: “I think there are certain things I’ve learned from that (the Dunblane school shooting) through my upbringing, through my life. It was obviously an unbelievably difficult time, and the way that the whole city and community came together in an extremely difficult time has never fully recovered but has become stronger through that. I definitely learned a lot of strong values from that.”
