Argentina and Spain lead 2-1 over Croatia and Austria – 2012 Davis Cup quarterfinals

ARGENTINA – CROATIA 2-1

David Nalbadian loves the Davis Cup. It is the competition where he struggles, he suffers and quite often he triumphs after an epic match.

Yesterday he lost an epic against Cilic, but this was the time to take it back.

“I feel good, happy. The conditions were a bit strange. It was windy and they served well. We played with heart and the people cheered us up all the time. I hope we can win one more match,” said Nalbandian, whose job came to an end unless something unexpected happens.

Cilic was of a different mood: “I feel sad, but I think we played well, we gave our best and we have to accept things the way they are. I also think that the crowd helped the Argentine team to remain close in the fifth set.”

Next matches are Del Potro – Cilic and Nalbadian – Karlovic.

Argentina is definately the favourite to get to the semis.

SPAIN – AUSTRIA 2-1

It was a little bit unexpected and in a way it does not mean to have a great impact on the overall result, but Austria won 1 point against Spain.

Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya defeated Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 3-6 6-4 6-4 7-6 (12).

“I would like to congratulate the Austrian team because they played a little bit better than us today and they deserve the win,” said Spanish captain Alex Corretja. “My players gave 100 per cent but the Austrians managed the situation better.”

‘It was very important for us to win today as after being 0-2 down we didn’t want to lose the tie and go home already after the second day,” said Marach. “After the rain break we decided to play different tactics which was good for us, we played more aggressively and it worked.”

As we said, it seems it will not really matter. Next matches are Ferrer – Melzer and Almagro – Haider-Maurer. If the Austrians will get another point they will be really really happy. 2 points look impossible, but… who knows?
