Raducanu Prioritizes Health And Smart Training After Injury Plagued Year

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has redefined her concept of success to focus on long-term health following a challenging year of injuries in 2023. The British tennis star, who recently climbed back into the top 100 of the WTA Rankings, emphasized the importance of training smart over training hard to avoid future injuries.

“Success in the long run is staying healthy. It’s about doing everything I can to avoid training hard, but training smart, to stay injury-free,” Raducanu said in an interview with Tennis Magazin. She highlighted how her priorities have shifted to maintaining her health and developing her game rather than participating in numerous tournaments.

Raducanu, who rose from 301st to 94th in the rankings after a strong performance at Wimbledon, aims to build a solid foundation for her game and physical condition over the next few years. Despite her injury setbacks, including surgeries on both wrists and her ankle, she remains focused on making a full recovery and competing at a high level.

Reflecting on her time away from the tour, Raducanu noted, “I’ve learned a lot about myself. To feel at my best in tennis or anything else, I need to be fresh and hungry.” She believes that maintaining a balance between training and rest is crucial for sustaining her passion and performance in the sport.

As Raducanu prepares for the upcoming North American hard-court swing, she will skip the Paris Olympics to concentrate on her long-term goals. She is set to compete next at the WTA 500 event in Washington, starting on July 29.
