German qualifier Dustin Brown upsets top-seeded Alexander Zverev in Stuttgart

Brown beats Zverev to reach the quarterfinals

Dustin Brown beat Alexander Zverev in the 2nd round of the Mercedes Cup.

Brown upset Zverev in a day of upsets at the Mercedes Cup. The 34-year-old qualifier defeated his fellow German 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3.

This is only the fourth time that Brown has defeated a top-10 ranked player.

The Match

The 5th ranked lost his second serve of the match. Zverev had his opportunity to break Brown in the 8th game to level but the 170th ranked saved 1 break point to lead 5-3. Zverev saved 4 set points on his serve at 5-3 but could not stop Brown from winning the set 6-4.

In the 2nd set, Brown missed an opportunity to break his fellow German at 5-5, which helped the world no.5 to take the game to the tiebreak and win it by 7-6(3)

In the 3rd set, the world no.170 saved 3 break points and then broke Zverev with a forehand volley winner in the very next game to lead 5-3. Brown won the set 6-3.

Brown won the match 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3 in 2 hours and 3 minutes.

In the match, Brown saved 13 of the 14 break points he faced. In the course of the game, the 170th ranked hit a number of spectacular winners. This is his first win against a top-10 player since 2017.

Brown will either face Gilles Simon or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
