Daniil Medvedev has urged the implementation of VAR in tennis following a controversial incident during his Wimbledon match. The drama unfolded in the opening set when the chair umpire, Eva Asderaki-Moore, ruled that the ball had bounced twice, costing Medvedev his break advantage. Medvedev was visibly frustrated by the decision and appeared to say something in Russian towards the umpire. This led Asderaki-Moore to call for the tournament referee and match supervisor, resulting in a lengthy on-court discussion.

Despite the commotion, Medvedev only received a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Addressing the incident in his post-match press conference, the world No. 5 clarified, “I don’t know if it was a double bounce or not. I thought no. That was tricky. The thing is that once long ago Roland Garros against Marin Cilic I lost, and she didn’t see that was one bounce. So I had this in my mind. I said something in Russian, not unpleasant, but not over the line. So I got a code for it.” Medvedev stressed that he never felt he was in danger of being defaulted.

Medvedev’s frustration highlighted a broader issue in tennis—the need for technological assistance in officiating. He suggested the use of video replays to avoid such controversies in the future. “The thing is that I think it would be so much easier with a challenge system,” he said.

“The challenge system shows a bounce. So if there was a bounce, it would show it. Then if we use it, we would never have this situation. So I don’t know why don’t we use the challenge system for double bounce, the Hawk-Eye or whatever.” Medvedev’s call for VAR reflects a growing consensus among players that technology could help ensure fairer outcomes in critical moments.
