Azarenka wins the Indian Wells title

Vika Azarenka is back!

The former world no.1 had a great performance against Serena Williams to defeat the American 6-4 6-4 in the Indian Wells final. This is Azarenka’s 2nd title in 2016 (after Brisbane), the 19 of her great career. After this win Vika has a solid 16-2 win-loss record.

The final

Vika was in firm command for the entire match with exception of the very end. In the opener she gained the decisive break in the first game to hold serve and win the set 6-4. In the second set, the Belarusian had a great start to grab a 4-0 lead. Eventually Vika failed to serve out the match when she was leading 5-2 and Serena was pretty close to stage an incredible comeback to bring the set to a 5-4 score line. Azarenka didn’t fail to serve out the match on the 10th game to save 2 break points (15-40) and finally win the encounter after 90 minutes.

Serena

The world no.1 had an emotional speech to say “It was really hard the last moment I had here wasn’t the greatest, so thank you so much. Thank you so much for the cheers; I can’t tell you how much it means to me. I can’t even begin to tell you!

“I’m just so happy to be able to stand here again.”

Azarenka

Vika had great words for the American “I wanted to first address a personal thank you to Serena. I know how emotional it was for you to be back here and you truly inspired so many people out there to see the type of commitment you have to the game. It’s truly inspiring.

“Thank you for that from the bottom of my heart. You are an amazing competitor who changed the game. If it wasn’t for you and how hard you work and seeing you play so well, I wouldn’t be as motivated to come back and work so hard. Thank you on behalf of the sport.”

After this tournament Vika will be ranked no.8 (no.3 in the Road to Singapore rankings). Going for more.
