Venus and Serena Williams advance, Bartoli upset – 2012 WTA Family Circle Open – Charleston

The Williams’ comeback is on a roll. The sisters look unstoppable in Charleston.

Venus confirms that she find it comfortable to play on clay. She has already won this tournament in 2004 and it seems that she can make it also this year if she can overcome her sister in a hypotetical semifinal. ‘If we both get to the semifinal,’ Venus said, ‘I guess the best Williams will win.’

Before crashing with Serena, Venus has to face Lisiki that has already won the tournament in 2009.

Serena is also in top form. She conceded only 4 games to Erakovic. On top of it she displayed a very strong serve blasting 4 aces in the second set at a speed of approx 120mhp!

It’s clear that Serena is preparing the clay court season here that will end up with the Roland Garros.
‘I’m really excited to be playing some matches here because it really gives you confidence in the things that you want to work on, not just for today and tomorrow, but the rest of the clay-court season. So I felt good,’ Serena said. ‘I love the clay.’

Serena should play Sam Stosur in the next round.

Bartoli was the big upset of the day. The nr.1 seed had an unexpected loss by Hercog (world nr.38) 6-4 1-6 6-4. The Slovenian had a remarkable comeback when she was losing 4-2 in the decider to win 4 straight games.

Other results:

Zvonareva – Voegele 5-7 6-3 6-4
Safarova – Wozniak 6- 6-7 (4) 6-1
