Auger-Aliassime breezes past Gulbis in the 1st round in Stuttgart

Felix beats Gulbis in the straight sets

Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Latvian veteran Ernests Gulbis 7-5 6-3 in the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

This is the first ever ATP tour win for the young Canadian on the grass.

The 18-year-old looked unbeatable on serve as he eased past Gulbis in straight sets. This has been a very impressive season for the young Canadian who is now ranked 21st in the world.

The 18-year old beat Gulbis 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour and 26 minutes.

The Match

In the first set, both the players won their service games till the 11th game (6-5). The 21st ranked broke the Latvian in the 12th game of the set to win it 7-5.

The second set was a breeze for the young Canadian who just needed to break his opponent once to win the set 6-3.

Felix made two breaks in the match and hit four aces while the 90th ranked Gulbis hit 6 aces.

After the match the 18-year old Canadian star commented:

“I was surprised because I thought it would be a lot tougher, I still have a lot to learn on grass.”

Felix will now face either Gilles Simon or Peter Gojowczyk in the 2nd round of the tournament.
