Explained. Why Federer Didn't Attend Murray's Farewell In Wimbledon Despite Being In London

Roger Federer, despite being in London, missed Andy Murray’s farewell match at Wimbledon due to prior commitments. Speaking to ESPN, Federer explained the circumstances behind his absence.

Federer flew into London specifically to watch Murray’s doubles match on Thursday. However, he had already committed to other obligations at the time the match was scheduled, leading to his unavailability.

Federer expressed his regret: “I wish I could’ve been there last night but I already had obligations because I didn’t know how it was gonna all play out. I actually took an earlier flight on Tuesday to be here in case he played his singles. As I boarded the flight, I learned Andy wasn’t playing singles. I was like ‘Oh my God.’ I was on standby. Sadly, last night I couldn’t be there.”

Despite missing the match, Federer made an effort to see Murray beforehand. “I quickly went to see him before the match. I could see Andy was extremely nervous and caring for that very moment. Obviously, Wimbledon means so much to him and his family and team.”

Reflecting on their history and Murray’s career, Federer shared his admiration: “He was there for my retirement at the Laver Cup. I was so happy he was around. I hope I get to see Andy. What an incredible career. I loved playing against him even though he beat me probably 20 times. He’s been terrific. Of course, I was emotional as well yesterday.”

Federer acknowledged the end of an era: “We’re 2 down in the Big 4. You and now Andy Murray has joined you, saying goodbye to Wimbledon singles competition.”

Federer’s heartfelt words highlight the mutual respect and camaraderie shared among tennis legends, marking a poignant moment in the sport’s history.
