Medvedev explains why he will play the Olympics in Paris singles, doubles and mixed

Medvedev praises Alcaraz and Sinner, highlighting their power and consistency, and confirms participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Why Medvedev Is Stunnd By Jannik Sinner And Carlos Alcaraz In Wimbledon Interview

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are ushering in a new era of thrilling rivalries in men’s tennis, reminiscent of the legendary ‘Big Four’—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. As the duo continues to impress at Wimbledon, Daniil Medvedev shared his insights on their potential and how they stack up against the best in the game.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, has faced Alcaraz and Sinner multiple times, with 11 career meetings against Sinner and six with Alcaraz. Reflecting on his experiences after a second-round victory over Alexandre Muller, Medvedev spoke highly of both young stars.

Discussing Alcaraz, who advanced to the third round on Wednesday, Medvedev highlighted his extraordinary power and consistency. “Carlos has a very big quality, like power quality,” Medvedev noted. “When he was really young, like 17, he could miss a lot. He has these crazy shots, but at least he misses. Now when he’s in the zone, he doesn’t miss much. We saw it in [this year’s] Roland-Garros. I watched a bit of the semi-final and final, not the whole match. You could see that some moments he was missing, struggling.”

“That’s amazing because he played two big, top players, Jannik and Sascha [Zverev]. Even not playing his best and missing, every time he would hit a rocket in the court, the other guy would be in such trouble. That’s his big quality, very, very strong shots, doesn’t matter a little bit the position. He’s very easy generating power from slow balls, which sometimes many players have trouble [with]. You can use it. You play like a slow ball, you know at least you have the chance to stay in the rally. With Carlos, no. There is no chance. That’s his biggest quality in my opinion.”

Turning his attention to Sinner, the current world No. 1 who defeated Matteo Berrettini to reach the third round, Medvedev emphasized his remarkable consistency and power. “We always knew it’s tough to play him,” Medvedev remarked. “He can hit winners from every position of the court, but he could miss. Now he doesn’t miss much. It’s not easy.”

Medvedev also discussed his plans for the upcoming Olympic Games, confirming his participation despite the challenges. He reminisced about his experience in Tokyo 2021, expressing excitement for Paris 2024. “If I’m healthy, 100 per cent I will be there,” he said. “For me it was a very easy decision. In Tokyo, I loved the atmosphere, I loved being there, playing there. It’s going to be even different in Paris. Because Tokyo was Covid, no people, closed atmosphere, and I loved it. So I’m sure it’s going to be even more fun in Paris.”

“I know if I’m thinking strictly about my personal career, it’s better to go to Canada, prepare hard courts. When I’m 40, if I can say I played in Tokyo Olympics, Paris Olympics, Los Angeles Olympics, I had a lot of fun in my life, my career, I’m going to be happy. I’m going to prepare a lot [for the] doubles and mixed doubles, because I do believe I have more chances there than in Roland-Garros singles. I’m going to have a lot of fun, enjoy playing. I look forward to it.”

As Alcaraz and Sinner continue their Wimbledon campaigns, Medvedev’s high praise underscores the potential of this new rivalry to shape the future of tennis.
