Before losing badly at Wimbledon, Andrey Rublev smashed his racquet against himself seven times, raising fears among his supporters for his health.
He lost the opening round match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 against Francisco Comesana on the No. 2 Court due to an emotional outburst in the third set’s fourth game that left him bleeding from multiple knee strikes.
When Rublev was broken and behind 4-1 in the first set of the match, he lost his cool and began hitting his racquet repeatedly at himself. Rublev would not recover his calm, but he did attempt to calm his supporters’ concerns about his health and provide an explanation for his actions at Roland Garros.
He expressed his thoughts about it and said: “I wouldn’t do it if I was able to hit the racquet on the floor. We’re not allowed to hit it on the grass, so I don’t know. At that moment, I couldn’t take it anymore. I needed to let my emotions out. But thanks. Everything is fine.”
The reporter further asked Rublev: “Will you go back and watch the video of things like that?”
He replied: “I don’t watch those kinds of videos. It’s not only about watching the videos. In general, it’s about trying to improve yourself. It’s a process and it takes time.”
