Matteo Berrettini praises Jannik Sinner's hunger and humility, calling him an inspiration as they prepare for a challenging Wimbledon match.

Matteo Berrettini Praises Jannik Sinner's Secrets To Success And Sees Him As Inspiration

Matteo Berrettini believes that Jannik Sinner’s incredible rise over the past year can be attributed to two key “secrets”: his hunger for improvement and his humble attitude. The world No. 1 has been in phenomenal form, winning four titles this year, including his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open, and has climbed to the top of the ATP Rankings.

Reflecting on Sinner’s development, Berrettini shared that he first sensed Sinner’s potential during a practice session in Monte Carlo in 2019. Despite not being able to predict future world No. 1s, he was impressed by Sinner’s rapid learning and exceptional attitude. This continuous learning process, according to Berrettini, has been crucial to Sinner’s swift ascent in the tennis world.

“We always forget how young he is. Just at the end of last year I was injured, and I wasn’t on tour to see him live with my eyes. And then I had the chance to go in Davis Cup, and it was unbelievable. It was like we were looking at each other saying, Is this guy real? Because he wasn’t missing. Hitting every ball full power. It was just the confidence that he built throughout the year was unbelievable,” said Berrettini.

Sinner, now 22, has amassed a remarkable 39-3 win-loss record in 2024, securing his top-ranking spot after the French Open. His victory over Yannick Hanfmann in the first round at Wimbledon further solidified his dominance. Berrettini, who won his first-round match against Marton Fucsovics, will face Sinner next and acknowledges the challenge ahead given Sinner’s stellar grass-court record.

Berrettini admires Sinner’s constant quest for self-improvement and his grounded demeanor, traits he believes are central to Sinner’s success. Personally, Berrettini finds Sinner’s journey inspiring, motivating him to elevate his own game.

“I think his secret is that he is really hungry for improvement. That’s his secret. And the humbleness that he has about it. Yeah, just special,” Berrettini noted.

Sinner, anticipating a tough match against Berrettini, respects his compatriot’s grass-court prowess, which includes a runner-up finish at Wimbledon in 2021. He views their upcoming clash as a valuable challenge to gauge his level on grass.

“This is the surface of him, he knows how to play very well here. Here he played in a final and I know it will be tough,” Sinner commented. “I expect a difficult match but I want to take it as a good challenge to see where my level is, and in particular where I am on this surface.”

As these two Italian stars prepare to face off, the match promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and determination, underscoring the exciting future of tennis.
