With Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune aspires to form a new “Big Three” and expresses inspiration from Rafael Nadal’s ability to manage his emotions well when playing.
Though he hasn’t yet surpassed Sinner and Alcaraz in accomplishments, 21-year-old Dane made his professional tennis debut simultaneously. Alcaraz has already won the US Open, Wimbledon, and French Open, and Sinner is now ranked #1 in the world after winning the Australian Open in January.
On the other hand, Rune has had a rough season thus far and dropped to 15th in the world after peaking at No. 4 last year and winning a Masters 1000 title in Paris in 2022.
That hasn’t prevented the young player from setting high standards, as he stated in an interview that he aspires to be a member of the new generation that succeeds the three greatest major winners of all time, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.
He talked about it in a recent interview and said: “We [Sinner, Alcaraz, and Rune] cannot compare ourselves at all yet to Novak, Rafa and Roger. But the fact people are starting to talk about the next Big 3 is exciting. It’s what makes tennis bigger and more exciting. Rivalries are very important. It’s interesting to have all the characters; that’s why hopefully they’ll be calling us the next big 3.”
He added: “I thought if I could stay consistent, I could have already, maybe, had one. I’ve just got to believe in what I’m doing now and trust the process. How I’m best on the court is if I’m controlled when things go against me and when things go against me, I show emotions. I think Rafa is a great example of someone who shows a lot of emotion but also a lot of good emotion on the court. It’s a big inspiration.”
