Sloane Stephens wins epic title in Acapulco

Sloane Stephens is finally having a great run!

The American failed to keep up with her huge potential so far (she is just 22 btw) to finally start a season in the best possible way by winning (already) 2 titles. After triumphing in Auckland, Sloane has now won a tough title in Acapulco.

Sloane had to suffered a lot in the final before overcoming an always combative Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 4-6 7-6 (5). Sloane squandered a 1-break-up lead in the 2nd and 3rd set. In the decider the American didn’t manage to convert 2 championship points on Cibulkova’s serve (6-5) and 1 championship point in the breaker (she was 6-4 up). Eventually she held her nerves to get it at the 4th attempt.

Stephens. A great start of the year

Sloane was ecstatic after winning the title to comment “We had a great week and a great start to the year, and I’m looking forward to keeping it going.

I don’t think I’ve ever played in front of a crowd quite like this. Thank you for letting me experience this in Acapulco because it’s something I’ll remember forever.”
