John McEnroe wants Wimbledon to put up an Andy Murray statue in honour of the player’s accomplishments at SW19.
After defeating Novak Djokovic in 2013, Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years. Three years later, he added another major on the grass.
There are already likenesses of six-game notables, like Virginia Wade and Fred Perry, all around the grounds in south-west London, and McEnroe thinks Murray should be the next to join them.
Nadal’s statue was unveiled back in May 2021 and is situated adjacent to the public entrance gate and the Jardin des Mousquetaires. Nadal has an unmatched record in the clay-court Major, having won the French Open 14 times.
MeEnroe expressed his remarks about it and said: “If I were making that decision, I would say, yes, because that’s a long drought, 77 years. He’s changed the way people look at British tennis. He’s one of the greatest competitors that I’ve ever seen play tennis. It would be well deserved, and it’d be awesome because two of his three grand slam wins were at Wimbledon plus the Olympics. So that would seem to make a whole lot of sense.”
Richard Lewis, the All England Club’s then-chief executive, stated in 2019 that he was certain that something similar to that would be displayed at Wimbledon, but he claimed it wouldn’t occur until after Murray’s retirement.
Though an overall victory seems doubtful, McEnroe believes Murray can have one last dance if he can become fit.
McEnroe added: “I could see him getting into the second week. This guy knows how to play on any surface but he certainly knows how to play on grass better than almost anyone that’s played. He’ll use all that experience but obviously, a fair amount of it is going to depend on the draw and see who he’s got early on. Maybe he’ll be able to get the right schedule so that he can get the proper rest. But that would be a big ask, but it’d be a hell of a way to go out. It would be cool if he got a couple of breaks because he has certainly been on the short end of the stick for too long with all the injuries.”
