Dominic Thiem scored an easy victory over Gael Monfils to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open. Thiem had played 3 tough matches up to the third round where each of his matches lasted for 4 sets. The match against Monfils, however, was an easy one or Thiem.

Thiem beat Monfils 6-4 6-4 6-2 in 1 hour and 48 minutes.

It was a packed home crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier for Monfils and he was continuously urged on by the local crowd but this did not stop the Austrian to be on course to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open for the fourth successive time. The defeat of the Frenchman means that there is no men’s singles player to represent France in the last eight.

The Match

In the first set, Thiem surged ahead with a lead of  5-1 but the Frenchman bridged the gap by breaking the world no.4 but that was not sufficient for him to make any decisive impact on the result of the first set which was won by the Austrian 6-4

.

Next set had a pretty similar story in which the Austrian broke the Frenchman once to win the set 6-4, while in the 3rd set the world no.4 broke the 17th ranked player twice to win it 6-2.

“I love playing here and I hope I can be on this court again on Wednesday,” he said.

Incidentally, Thiem was in news by suggesting Serena Williams had a “bad personality” after a strange row in which he was booted out of his own press conference. The organisers did this to accommodate American star, Serena Williams.
