Cuevas wins the title in Rio

Pablo Cuevas wins the title in Rio after a rather tough and successful week.

The Uruguayan won the most important match of his career against Rafael Nadal in the semifinal to edge an in-form Pella in the final 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-4. The match lasted 2 hours and 16 minutes.

HISTORY MADE

Interesting enough Cuevas is the only player in tennis history to win an ATP event after beating only left-handed players.

Cuevas. I love my time in Brazil

A visibly happy Cuevas commented “I’m very happy to win my first 500 title, especially after winning a special semi-final against one of the greatest players ever on clay (Nadal).  Today, against Guido, I won a difficult but good match between the two of us. I really love my time in Brazil, not only when I’m on court. I enjoy it when I play here.

Guido is a very complete player. He had a great week here. I have nothing but nice words to say about him.”

After this tournament Cuevas will gain 18 positions in the ATP rankings to be the new world no.27.
