After hobbling through five games, Andy Murray pulled out of his Queen’s second-round match.
Later on, it was confirmed that the official reason for the withdrawal was a back injury. It might still be okay if it was only a minor adjustment or spasm. If it becomes any more intense, he will undoubtedly be a doubt for Wimbledon, which is in 11 days.
The 37-year-old was struggling during his 1,001st Tour-level match warm-up when Thompson returned the serve and Murray made a horrifying step that prevented him from getting anywhere near the ball on the opening point. Immediately, it was acutely obvious that there was a significant problem.
He was seen in pre-match footage coming out of the dressing room and very carefully making his way down the Queen’s Club steps. But it’s possible that he would not have even taken the court if he had been having this much trouble on Wednesday morning.
After three games, he was given a medical timeout and had extensive back therapy. It’s unclear what Murray’s plans entail if this injury poses a risk to his participation at Wimbledon.
Not what we want to see!
