Former world number one Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion with two Wimbledon titles, could be playing at the prestigious tournament for the last time this season. Months ago, Murray expressed his desire to retire from professional tennis after the summer. Wimbledon, the third major of the season, is prepared for a special tribute to the Scot, though the final decision rests with Murray, as confirmed by the tournament’s executive president, Sally Bolton.

“We’re ready, but it’s Andy’s decision. We’re ready for whatever he decides. We can adapt,” said Bolton, noting that the tournament, set to start on July 1, is prepared to honor Murray should he choose to retire there.

Murray, despite his enduring passion for tennis, acknowledges the nearing end of his career. “Probably if I was going to finish my career, I would rather finish at Wimbledon or an Olympic Games – to me that would probably be more fitting,” he stated. Reflecting on his motivation, Murray added, “To get a chance to compete at a fifth one is a reason to stay motivated and continue playing. Like I said, a lot of it is based on results and physically how I’m feeling as well.”

Bolton also mentioned the possibility of erecting a statue in Murray’s honor at Wimbledon, akin to the tribute for Fred Perry.

Recently, Murray’s performance has been challenging, with a loss in the Stuttgart tournament to American Marcos Girón. Despite this, Murray aims to prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games, hoping to compete one last time after his gold medal victories in London 2012 and Rio 2016. Next week, Murray will exit the Top 100 rankings for the first time since 2022, marking another chapter in his storied career.
