Andrey Rublev appears to be missing the Olympics, even though Russian athletes are permitted to compete as neutrals. The decision was made for the benefit of Rublev’s health, according to his mother, who recently communicated her son’s choice.

Rublev is reportedly afflicted with chronic tonsillitis, and he has chosen to receive treatment for the illness during the Olympic Games in Paris.

Rublev’s mother, Marina Marenko, said: “Yes, Andrey will not go to the Games in Paris. I only recently learned from him that he will not participate in the Olympics. But he didn’t say why. I think it has to do with health. Andrey just needs to find time to heal his throat. Treat or remove tonsils. I understand that after this, the body is greatly weakened.”

Rublev had previously stated that he was excited to compete at the Paris Olympics, despite criticism from several players regarding the event’s scheduling.

Rublev said: “If God wills and everything remains in its present-day situation, meaning that we can play, while I’m physically fit and okay to play, it’s very likely that I’ll go [to Paris]. I will certainly be in the singles [competitions] and I don’t know about the rest of the [Russian] players because we have not decided on this issue as of yet.”
