Matteo Berrettini, the 28-year-old Italian tennis star, has set his sights on winning the Stuttgart final against Jack Draper. Draper, a 22-year-old sixth seed, has impressed throughout the tournament, notably defeating defending champion Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals with a powerful display of 13 aces and 35 winners, culminating in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Berrettini, who secured his place in the final with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 victory over fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in just 65 minutes, acknowledged the challenge Draper poses. “We never even practised together so I hope my coach has studied him well. He has been serving brilliantly so it is going to be a match of serving tomorrow. Good luck to Jack but I will try to beat him,” Berrettini stated.
Draper, regardless of the final’s outcome, is set to rise to 32nd in the world rankings and will become the British number one, surpassing Cameron Norrie. This also positions him for a potential seeded spot at Wimbledon starting on July 1. Draper is on the brink of securing his first singles title on the elite men’s tour, but Berrettini, unseeded yet formidable, stands as a significant obstacle. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up has returned to form, overcoming a series of injuries that saw his ranking drop to 95. A two-time former winner in Stuttgart, Berrettini boasts an impressive record with four of his eight career titles won on grass.
As both players prepare for the final showdown, the anticipation is high. Berrettini’s experience and Draper’s rising momentum promise a thrilling clash on Sunday.
