Carlos Alcaraz acknowledges that it is difficult to decide between winning gold for Spain in the Olympics in Paris and successfully defending his Wimbledon title this year.
Tennis players have a busy schedule for the next two months, starting on July 1 with Wimbledon and continuing with Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4, when they return to clay courts to prepare for the 2024 Paris Games.
Alcaraz is one of just five male players in the Open Era to have accomplished the Channel Slam, which entails winning both the French Open and Wimbledon in back-to-back years. This achievement was made possible by his victory on Sunday.
Players will have one week to get ready for the Olympics in Paris, so there won’t be much time for rest following Wimbledon.
The Spaniard was asked whether Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics are higher on his list of goals this year after winning the clay-court Grand Slam. Alcaraz expressed his thoughts about it and said: “It is complicated, but the games are held every four years and it is a special tournament because it is not just for you because you represent a whole country, all Spaniards. This year, I would choose Olympic gold.”
For the first time in his career, Alcaraz will compete for Spain in the Olympics. He will play both singles and doubles, but the doubles match is sure to draw the most attention because Alcaraz is predicted to partner with the legendary Rafael Nadal.
When he returns to Roland Garros later in the year, he will undoubtedly have many fond memories after winning the French Open.
