Federer beats Ruud to become oldest player to reach the 4th round in Paris

Federer enters the 4th round in Paris

It was easy for Roger Federer to get past Norway’s Casper Ruud to reach the 4th round of the French Open.

Federer won  6-3 6-1 7-6(10-8) in 2 hours and 11 minutes. With this win Federer also created a unique record, that is to become the oldest male player to reach the 4th round of the French Open. The Swiss also became the first player to reach the round of 16 for the 14th time.

The Swiss was playing his 400th Grand Slam match today and eased past his 20-year-old Norwegian opponent.

The Match

In the first set, Rudd managed to hold his serve till the 6th game and level at 3-3, but the master player broke in the 7th and 9th game to win the first set 6-3.

The 2nd set, the Swiss broke the Norwegian in the 2nd and the 4th game and won the set easily by 6-1.

The 63rd ranked Norwegian was competitive in the 3rd set and broke the world no.3 in the 2nd game and lead 2-0, however, the advantage was swiftly bridged by Federer in the very next game breaking the serve of the 20-year-old. Ruud held on his serve for the next 4 games to take the game to the tiebreaker. Federer missed on 3 match points but ultimately won the tiebreaker 10-8.

Federer appreciated the tenacity of the young player saying: “He doesn’t make any noise. I love that.”

There is a fun fact about this match, Ruud’s father was in the draw when Federer made his debut in 1999.
