According to former British No. 1 Johanna Konta, Emma Raducanu’s primary objective this summer will be to maintain her physical fitness.
Raducanu focused on a solid grass court campaign, skipping a significant portion of the clay court season, including the French Open, after making a comeback to sports at the beginning of the year.
The 2021 US Open winner, who advanced to the first-ever WTA-level quarterfinal on the surface at the WTA 250 Nottingham Open, is pleased with how she has been playing so far. She won’t have any points to defend this summer or in the future on grass, so she might rise quickly up the rankings the remainder of the way.
However, former Wimbledon semifinalist and Nottingham champion Konta thinks Raducanu will prioritize fitness over rankings. She expressed her remarks about Raducanu and said: “I mean, I would imagine that for her, she would be looking to stay healthy physically and play a lot of matches. That will be a big goal of hers. I think for her, it will be more than just the grass; it will be to stay healthy into the US swing. She obviously will have incredible memories from the US hard court swing, so I think in general just for her to stay healthy for the rest of this year and get as many matches as possible.”
She added: “Obviously, Emma will have the spotlight on her because of her US Open achievement, which was incredible. It’s a really fun time of the year to be a British player. They’ll be managing themselves and they’ll be managing their nerves for their desires of what they want from this time of the year.”
