Carlos Alcaraz disclosed that he shed tears a few weeks before the French Open as an injury could ruin his clay-court season.
Due to a forearm issue, the world No. 2 missed the Italian Open, Barcelona Open, and Monte-Carlo Masters. And he clarified that missing some of the most significant tournaments was a mental agony.
However, Alcaraz’s choice to be cautious paid off, as he recovered in time for Roland Garros, where he went on to win his third Grand Slam title.
However, he miraculously gave up in the third set and won the trophy, overcoming a sets-to-one deficit in both the semifinal and championship matches. Alcaraz acknowledged that he had cried just before Roland Garros, despite winning Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces.
Alcaraz said in a recent interview: “I tend to cry more out of frustration than out of happiness. I don’t cry a lot and with the topic of the last injury, I have cried a couple of times when I had to miss tournaments that I was very excited about. Mentally, it was anguish because I use my right forearm for everything; I exert a lot of speed and strength in each hit and the forearm suffers a lot. It is an area in which I was very worried, thinking that I was not going to recover.”
He added: “In Madrid, it already bothered me in the fourth match and I couldn’t go to Rome. We had tests and all the things we had to do to get here as best as possible, but I kept thinking about what was going to happen because I do everything with my right arm.”
