Konta reaches historical AO semifinal

What an incredible story in Melbourne.

in 2014 Johanna Konta hasn’t even managed to qualify for the Australian Open main draw and 1 year after she gets to the last 4!

Jo had a rather weird January since she crashed out in the 1st round in both Shenzhen and Hobart. Then the Brit surprised Venus Williams in the first round in Melbourne and she got to the semi thanks also to a rather favorable draw after beating Zheng (world no. 83), Allertova (no.66), Makarova (24) and Zhang (133).

The quarter against Shuai Zhang was rather smooth for Jo with the Brit winning 6-4 6-1 in just 83 minutes. To be fair with the Chinese, she could have been tired after a very long tournament that started from the qualifications. On her way, Zhang has managed to upset huge players such as Halep, Cornet and Keys on her way to the quarters.

WHAT A RUN FOR ZHANG!

Soon after the match, Jo commented “I really enjoyed playing in front of you guys [addressing the crowd]. This is why we play, to get the chance to play in front of such a wonderful crowd.

I just wanted to make sure I came out and played the best level I could and, hopefully, gave everyone some good entertainment!”

This is the first time since 1983 that a British woman reaches a grand slam semi (last time in Melbourne was in 1977).

The semis

Jo will play Angelique Kerber in the semifinal. They have never played each other so far. The German is the obvious favorite for a place in the final.
