At the 2024 French Open, Coco Gauff and the chair umpire got into an argument during her semifinal match against Iga Swiatek on Thursday. The chair umpire’s controversial line call, which Gauff felt interfered with her play, sparked the discussion.

Gauff didn’t think it was fair since she sensed the linesperson’s call before she hit the ball, which meant the point should have been replayed. She approached the chair umpire to argue her point but to no avail. Gauff alerted the chair umpire to the loud boos emanating from the Court Philippe-Chartrier crowd at this point.

The 20-year-old went on to say that the reason the supporters were jeering her for the mistake was because they knew she was wrong to give Gauff the point.

Gauff said: “Are you serious? They are booing you because you are wrong. This is the second time this has happened. It’s a Grand Slam semifinal. Know the rules of the game.”

Gauff stepped back to the baseline so that the game could continue, upset that the call had not been repealed. While travelling back, the American was also captured on tape crying, an unexpected display of emotion that caught many of her social media followers off guard.
