In the opening set, Corentin Moutet defeated Jannik Sinner, who dominated play and appeared capable of beating his opponent. It was a terrific show, but it ended in the opening game of the second set when they broke.
After that, Jannik improved his tennis game and won the game from behind before tying the score in the set. The young Italian advanced to the Roland Garros quarterfinals after dominating and winning the third and fourth sets. A first set that showed Moutet gets a higher ranking despite an excellent performance.
During the post-match press conference, the Frenchman discussed the match and examined not only his progress but also Jannik’s and his image, as well as the support of the Paris audience.
He said: “There are many positive things to draw from. I’m happy to have changed my image during my tournament, or rather, I don’t know if I did but I think I succeeded in something. People only know us for what we do on the pitch and therefore they all have a particular image of me but the reality is that I work very hard to achieve my results. However, I’m happy; I’ve kept a positive attitude and I’ve received a lot of love from the crowd.”
He added: “It’s difficult to explain but everything became more difficult after winning the first set. In the beginning, I was very aggressive and I could attack. I was very concentrated and full of energy but later in the second set, it was much more aggressive. We were playing against Philippe Chatrier in the round of 16. He is number two in the world and the public is likely to be divided. There are people from all over the world who pay for a ticket to watch the tournament in Round 16. The atmosphere was incredible.”
