Bad news from Bianca Andreescu and Kiki Bertens as both player had to withdraw from the French Open after the competition also lost Petra Kvitova a couple of days ago.
Bianca Andreescu
The 18-year-old was back to competitions after 2 months following her successful run at the Sunshine doubles where she won Indian Wells before reaching the 4th round in Miami where she had to retire.
The Canadian suffered from a minor tear in her shoulder to take a long break from tennis, but unfortunately, she had to pull the plug in Paris before in doubles (she was competing with Fanny Stollar) and then from Singles as she had to face Sofia Kenin.
About the shoulder injury
Bianca released the following statement
“I’m disappointed to announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros. Tough moment for me but after discussing with my coaches, team and doctors, it was the safest decision to make after the shoulder pain I felt during my match. I will now rest and prepare for the upcoming grass court season. Thanks for all your support, it will make me come back stronger.”
Kiki Bertens
After her fantastic run in Madrid where she won the title and Rome where she reached the semifinal (see stats), Kiki was considered among the top favorite to win the Roland Garros. Unfortunately, the Dutchwoman had to withdraw during her 2nd round match against Viktoria Kuzmova as she wasn’t able to continue because of an unspecified illness.
Oh no 😰
Kiki Bertens, a favorite to win the title, forced to retire due to illness.
“I don’t have any power and I don’t feel well.”
Very sad and unlucky for the love-able Dutchwoman. #RG19 pic.twitter.com/U8kQ9H1ojo
