Lorenzo Musetti hopes to defeat Novak Djokovic at the 2024 French Open in addition to helping his countryman Jannik Sinner become the number-one seed in the ATP rankings.  In the claycourt major’s third round, Musetti will face the Serb.

Sinner’s remarkable performance this season makes it hardly surprising that the 22-year-old has become the top challenger to topple Djokovic. Sinner would undoubtedly become the first player to rank No. 1 in the world if the Serb were to quit the French Open before the semifinals.

This is something that Musetti will be thinking about as he prepares to play the world’s best player in the third round, after the Serb easily defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Musetti defeated Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to secure his spot against the top seed.

Musetti said he will be driven by the prospect of helping fellow Italian Sinner beat Djokovic as the world No. 1 player in an interview after his victory.

He expressed his thoughts about it and said: “Against Djokovic, I will also try to help Sinner for No. 1. I wish he would not place his hopes on me. He has his path; I think it is already well-written but if I can give him a hand, even a little. Patriotism doesn’t hurt.”
